ABSTRACT

The report noted that as much as 50 to 70% of the water resources were polluted due to contamination from agricultural activities. It is likely that similar, if not higher, risks of water pollution exist in developing countries where use of fertilizers is rapidly increasing, accelerated soil erosion is most serious, and stringent regulatory measures are not in place. Water quality is an important issue. It affects the mere fabric of human life. Agricultural practices with major impact on water quality include those that involve erosion management, nutrient management, and pest control. Erosion ManagementControl of accelerated soil erosion is likely to have a positive effect on water quality especially that of surface water and overland flow. Systems with low nutrient use efficiency have most drastic adverse effects on water quality. Not only should the nutrient losses by runoff/erosion and leaching be decreased, but nutrient use efficiency should also be improved.
