ABSTRACT

This chapter provides some tips on how best to prepare for the interview, what kind of questions to expect and how to approach the answers. Candidates commonly take one of two approaches when answering this question. The first is to detail their enjoyment of science and caring for people; the second is to recount a personal experience that inspired the candidate to pursue a career in medicine. Candidates need to strike the balance of not painting themselves in a negative light, while demonstrating an insight into their shortcomings. One approach to this dilemma is to present ‘positive’ weaknesses, such as: Becoming emotionally attached to patients and for science graduates. Doctors should also have the right to refuse to perform euthanasia and be able to refer the patient to a colleague. Interviews at Oxford and Cambridge have traditionally been very different from those at the other medical schools.
