ABSTRACT

Modern courses integrate the basic sciences for each body system, example, rdiovascular system or the musculoskeletal system. Lectures are the traditional teaching method and remain the most widely used. They involve a teacher speaking to many students in a large lecture theatre. Problem-based learning is another small-group learning method, where the teacher ‘facilitates’ the session as opposed to actively teaching. Students are given a scenario from which they brainstorm learning objectives. Anatomical teaching methods are a highly contentious issue. Dissection continues to be used by many medical schools, usually with a small group of students dissecting a cadaver on a weekly basis under the supervision of a demonstrator. The Universities of Oxford and Cambridge are different to the other UK medical schools due to their collegiate system. Colleges have a lot of autonomy over the application process and are able to dictate their own selection policies to a certain extent.
