ABSTRACT

A growing number of older people and those with disabilities are living in the community and often alone. Assistive Technology is defined as equipment used by older people and those with disabilities to maintain independence and functional ability. An ageing population and a changing focus towards independent living have resulted in an increasing demand for community support services. This chapter aims to evaluate the advantages and potential limitations of community alarms and monitors available on the UK market. The scope of the study will be partially informed through consultation with users, manufacturers and professionals prior to submission for ethical approval. Telecare is defined as “the remote or enhanced delivery of health and social care services to people in their own home by means of telecommunications and computer-based systems”. The evaluation will utilise a multi-method approach and will focus on the needs and abilities of the user.
