ABSTRACT

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Health and Safety Laboratory conducted a human factors intervention at a highhazard industry site. This chapter describes the research methods employed during an intervention to assess the impact of organisational and human factors on safety undertaken at a high-hazard site. HSE specialist inspectors have expertise in Human and Organisational Factors that is specifically applied and relevant to high-hazard industries. These specialist skills are used to support site inspectors when required. The project team decided on a sample of site staff whom they would like to interview or participate in the focus groups. The groups of staff covered the seven main categories of staff. This ensured the sample used in this intervention was representative of personnel on site. HSE have successfully used semi-structured interviews in similar interventions, and felt they would be an appropriate technique to use to collect the majority of information for this intervention.
