ABSTRACT

As part of an ongoing study a survey to identify Human Factors (HF) problems in the central control room of a North Sea Oil Platform was undertaken. This chapter relates to work carried out in relation to the Central Control Room (CCR) of a North Sea oil production platform. This CCR provides a centralised monitoring and control facility for the platform processes of original design circa 1970’s. The initial stage of the work involved data collection during a visit to the platform. This included observation of control room activities, discussions with control room staff and HF assessment of features within the control room against relevant standards and HF best practice. During this HF survey, the platform was mid-way through a period of organisational change which involved restructuring of roles and responsibilities, making some roles redundant. This appeared to have an adverse effect on some staff due to concerns over job security, and the proposed organisational changes.
