ABSTRACT

Many of the places, products and processes that people must use in their daily lives contain barriers that exclude anyone who has impairment. Barriers prevent people with impairments from taking advantage of the choices, opportunities and activities that non-impaired people enjoy. In the development of the Four Star MacDonald St. Paul’s Hotel, Sheffield and other hotels in the MacDonald group, the MacDonald development team had envisaged that they would require three distinct types of bedroom. The Accessible Property Register (APR) works with Sheffield Homes to identify and promote accessible and adapted property. APR has developed “access criteria” based on Building Regulations Part M. Criteria relate to parking, approach to the property, access, entrance level bathroom or WC, and access to entrance level rooms. Transport 4 All in Sheffield is a collaborative group of disabled public transport users, officers of both Sheffield City Council and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, and managers from some of the public transport operators in Sheffield.
