ABSTRACT
The classical solutions to the first order Yang-Mills equations seems set to become precision tools in problems of 4-manifold topology. It appears quite likely that any general theory of smooth 4-manifolds developed in the future will build in the geometry of gauge fields in a fundamental way. I will review here some of the techniques which have been used and the main results they yield.
