ABSTRACT

Well-known German magazines have in numerous articles dealt with the deplorable situation of misled young people, of terrorists who have become terrorists only because of their social “commitment.” Most of these articles are uncritical or contain a barely hidden sympathy common to so many of these publications. If it is correct that the success of a terrorist action depends to a large degree on the extent of publicity it enjoys, then the German media have contributed a great deal to this success. The terror propaganda and agitation have been accompanied in the German mass media with a permanent disparagement of the Federal Republic of Germany, of its free democratic system, of its institutions, and especially of those whose task it is to guarantee the security of all citizens — that is the police, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution,* the intelligence community and the judicial establishment.
