ABSTRACT

The nervous system is an exceedingly complex network of specialized organs and tissues that provide sensory, integrative, and motor functions essential for normal homeostasis. The nervous system is comprised of the brain, the spinal cord, and an extensive network of nerves and sensory organs. The fundamental cell of the nervous system is the neuron. The neuron is highly specialized for conduction of nerve impulses and is responsible for all special functions attributed to the nervous system. The nervous system is particularly vulnerable to toxic insult since nervous tissue has a limited or negligible capacity for regeneration. The subsequent build-up of the neurotransmitter causes central nervous system dysfunction. Organochlorine insecticides are chlorinated hydrocarbon compounds that generally act as nervous system stimulants. All solvents are fat soluble and will produce central nervous system effects at some level of exposure. The complexity of the nervous system has made neurotoxicology one of the most demanding disciplines in toxicology.
