ABSTRACT

The ergonomic case study found in this section is unique in that it examines an ergonomic problem in a “public” location. We often do not think about ergonomic issues associated with the construction and design of public facilities. Hand rails, steps and ramps, force requirements associated with opening and closing doors, and the width of corridors and entrance ways are just some of the numerous and very important ergonomic issues associated with facility design. With the passage of the American’s with Disabilities Act, ergonomic analysis has become an increasingly important area for both industry and the public sector. Consider researching this area of ergonomics to increase your understanding of the health and safety issues associated with building layout and design.
