ABSTRACT

This chapter describes colored, fluorescent and chromogenic reagents. It lists inorganic colorants in order of the groups (columns) of the periodic table. The chapter describes and sorts diverse organic colorants into several categories, namely a dye, reactive fluorochromes, including metal complexing agents, and chromogenic compounds used histochemically. The inorganic colorants include prussian blue, ruthenium red, osmium tetroxide, silver nitrate, protargol-s, colloidal gold, gold chloride, chloroauric acid, carbon black, sulfides, and iodine. The chapter provides information on the anionic organic colorants including pyranine, dithiooxamide, P-dimethylaminobenzylidenerhodanine, and dansyl chloride. It also includes a discussion on BODIPY and BODIPY derivatives, including cascade blue, tetracyclines, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, and doxycycline.
