ABSTRACT

Emissions of particulate matter are of increasing concern due to their potential acute health effects. Accordingly, the former Department of Transport, the former Department of the Environment and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, initiated a jointly funded research programme to obtain characteristic data for exhaust emissions and investigate robust methods for the generation of such data. The programme has comprised three phases: Phase 1—dentification of existing knowledge and data on the measurement of vehicular particulate emissions through a review of the open literature. Phase 2—definition of measurement techniques and instrumentation to be used in initial testing through reviews conducted by groups of experts. Phase 3—generation of an initial database of vehicular exhaust particulate emission characteristics, evaluation of a range of candidate particulate sizing instruments and an assessment of the current particulate dilution tunnel as a tool for exhaust particle concentration and size distribution analysis.
