ABSTRACT

Pre-comprehension prepares the way for the writing process by giving it a general direction in which one’s aims, the content of the text, linguistic aspects, and ideas about those reading the text are interwoven with each other. Letting the idea take shape —by writing — is a process that is insolubly linked with thought, feeling, and imagination. The creation of a written message is more a question of thought than a handicraft. Everything that via thought is expressed linguistically (as inner, spoken or written language) makes visible for us who we are, what we can, want, think, hope, believe, and so on. Within the framework of a certain common language, a word has its specific and relatively stable meaning. In the relation between thought and language — the way in which the conscious and unconscious aspects of thought become visible — there exists not only the side that is invisible and elusive, but also one that is clearly visible.
