ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies some major problems of present-day typical reading instruction, and describes briefly differentiated reading instruction according to the new language package. It discusses two ways in which the teaching-learning package tries to cope with teachers’ problems, namely the organisation of in-service training sessions, and the availability of a well-elaborated teacher manual. Starting from dissatisfaction with the typical situation of early reading instruction in Flemish schools a few years ago, a group of inspectors and teachers began constructing a teaching-learning package for language instruction in the primary school. For many teachers the transition from whole-class teaching toward differentiated reading instruction is quite difficult. Taking into account the data concerning the typical situation of reading instruction, a group of inspectors and teachers started, a few years ago, constructing a teaching-learning package for language instruction in the primary school.
