ABSTRACT
Educational research in Cyprus, mainly carried out by the Directorate of Secondary Education and the Pedagogical Institute, aims at providing data and assistance to the Ministry of Education, necessary for its developmental function. Research creates a bank of scientifically supported information to be used by the educational authorities in decision making, as well as by teachers in organizing their teaching activities. However, the most important reforms and innovations at secondary level have been the introduction of the 9-year integrated educational programme and more recently, the reorganization of the system of options and the introduction of Health Education. The newly proposed system provides for a common core course at form A which affords this form a period of familiarization and orientation within the lyceum (upper cycle).
