Fractal model for the grain-size distribution of expansive soils is studied in this paper. The physical mechanism of fractal grain-size distribution is explained, and the ranges of fractal dimension of grain-size distribution are obtained as 2.0 ~ 3.0. It is found that there is different fractal dimension for grain-size distribution of expansive soils with different genesis by using statistical analysis. The expansiveness, physical properties and mechanical properties of expansive soils can be quantitatively described by the fractal dimension of grain-size distribution of expansive soils.
