ABSTRACT

An unusual monazite was found in Muruntau high grade “Central” Au-quartz veins showing evidence for strong deformation and chemical heterogeneity. Low Th and other trace element contents suggest hydrothermal formation or alteration of the mineral. Besides monazite with “normal” La, Ce, Pr, and Nd contents as reported for monazite-(Ce) from other localities, there are areas characterized by strong enrichment of La or, alternatively, with distinct negative Ce anomalies. Brecciation and fluid heterogeneity are discussed to be responsible for the mineral characteristics observed.
