Mineralogy of pegmatite with giant epidote crystals, near Čanište, Macedonia

Giant epidote crystals up to 2m long have the formula:

(Ca_1.98Mn_0.02)_ΣAl_2.45Fe_0.53Ti_0.01(SiO₄)(Si₂O₇)O(OH), and unit cell parameters: a=8.890(2)Å, b=5.634(2)Å, c=10.147(2)Å, β=1 15.40(2)°, and V=459.1(2)ų. Epidote is in association with albite, microcline (amazonite variety), muscovite, garnet, titanite and zircon. Crystallization temperature is estimated to be about 400°C on the basis of two feldspars thermometer.
