ABSTRACT

A Mass Rapid Transit System for Delhi has been approved by Indian Government. Phase I of this system includes an underground corridor which passes underneath heavily built up Old Delhi area. One station has been planned in the heart of this area. Due to non-availability of open space the station has been planned to be constructed by enlarging the running tunnels. The condition of buildings / structures at the surface, which are about 200 years old, is poor and have been poorly maintained. As a part of construction programme, a detailed precondition survey of the buildings has been carried out and the effect of settlement due to tunnelling has been studied. The present paper deals with the detailed construction methodology for Chawri Bazaar station, instrumentation for monitoring the effect of tunneling on overlying structures and measures to safeguard these structures.
