ABSTRACT

In this paper a novel approach is followed to model the boring process by a convection analysis. In this simulation the tunnel is fixed and the soil moves in axial direction in the direction of the tunnel. The advantage of such an approach is that stress history of the soil is followed and it gives marked improvement to the existing calculation methods in performance. The method is used to simulate the boring of the 14.5 m High-Speed Line (HSL) Green Heart tunnel in Holland.
