ABSTRACT

A 2 years old female was admitted for possible globe preserving treatment of an unilateral retinoblastoma (12 x 19 x 13 mm), after the mother had noticed leucocoria in some gazing position of the eye. The child received 2 cylces of Cyclophosphamid, Carboplatin and Etoposid. Between the first and second course a Ruthenium 106 plaque with a duration of 14 days and a low dose rate was sutured at the base of the tumor. After a follow up of 13 months tumor regression could be observed to a tumor prominence of 3,4 mm and a base of 9 x 4 mm with a typical cottage cheese regression pattern. After 5 months of occlusion therapy visual acuity is now 20/32. Conclusion: Even in a large unilateral retinoblastoma with localized vitreous seeding the globe and some useful central vision may be preserved with new treatment modalities like combined chemotherapy and Ruthenium 106 plaque brachytherapy (chemoirradiation or brachychemoradiotherapy) thus avoiding enucleation or external beam irradiation.
