ABSTRACT

The ESA lecture was established in 1993, after prolonged discussions on whether it should bear the name of a distinguished strabismologist. In order not to hurt the feelings of any Country, I suggested the present definition. The first ESA Lecturer was Professor Joseph Lang from Zuerich, who gave his lecture in 1995 during our Cambridge Congress. I am extremely honoured of having been one of the lecturers myself. I am grateful to the ESA Council for having been requested to introduce to you today the 2003 ESA Lecturer, Gunnar Lennerstrand. This is a great privilege and pleasure for me.
