ABSTRACT

The aim of this prospective study was to compare visual screening at 3 years and at 4 years. At four Child Health Care Centres (CHCC) 478 children were tested at the age of 3. Of these children, 440 were tested again at the age of 4. Another group, consisting of 229 children, was examined at the age of 4 only. All children were tested with two different charts: The HVOT chart and the Lea LH symbol chart. The testability rate for 3 years was slightly more than 80% and for 4 years slightly more than 90%. The testing time was significantly longer at 3 years than at 4 years. Children who had been tested at 3 years had a significantly shorter time at 4 years than children who had not been tested previously. There was no statistical difference in the testability, mean testing time or visual acuity between the two charts.
