ABSTRACT

A retrospective study to investigate the treatment and outcome of patients with Convergence Insufficiency was undertaken. 94% of patients who completed their orthoptic treatment plan were symptom free. Patients completing treatment were found to have a mean age of 31yrs, greater than the mean age of those who failed to complete 15.5 yrs (p=<0.05). Patients failing to complete treatment were followed up with a telephone questionnaire. Reasons for non completion included; ineffective exercises, relocating, home treatment, and symptoms resolving. To improve completion rate amongst the younger group the exercise strategy should be reviewed. Better provision of instructions using DVD or video is recommended along with the redesign of the current exercise regime, developing computer based exercise programmes.
