ABSTRACT

Unilateral cataracts in children provoke an interruption of binocular vision development at a more or less sensible stage function of the age of occurrence. We report 75 cases of unilateral cataracts in children followed more than 3 years after surgery (mean 6.5 years). Visual results are reported. We focused on binocular and oculomotor state. When opacification occurs before age 1, 60% of cases present a typical but “acquired” infantile strabismus syndrome. It may, in itself, limit VA of the sound eye, because of its specific fixation anomalies (MLN, Fixation in Adduction…). Unilateral congenital cataracts may then have binocular consequences and lead to bilateral low vision. This last comment should represent another motivation for real treatment of these deep amblyopias. Neutralisation is the most common binocular scar found in cases opacified later. 70% of these last case present only microtropias. KEYWORDS: Unilateral congenital cataracts. Visual results.
