ABSTRACT

From 1990–2000, lens extraction was performed in 200 eyes with pediatric cataract. This study is a retrospective analysis of the frequency of strabismus in this cohort. After lens extraction, there were twice as many new cases of strabismus in bilateral aphakic patients compared to bilateral Pseudophakic patients. In the patients with unilateral cataract, both apakic and Pseudophakic, the frequency of post lens extraction strabismus was comparable. Fifty-seven percent of the children with bilateral cataract had a best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) higher than 0.8. Only 23% of the patients with unilateral cataract had a BCVA higher than 0.5. Pediatric pseudophakia may rapidly achieve visual rehabilitation.
