ABSTRACT

In order to revise the guidelines for screening of vision in children, Norwegian health authorities established a multidisiplinary group in January 2001. The group was to review existing documentation and propose recommendations for visual screening in the primary health care. Large randomized controlled trials concerning this problem is lacking. However, there are a number of good clinical studies, especially from Sweden, evaluating screening and treatment for amblyopia. Also experts groups in different countries have considered the matter. Finally more than 30 years of systematic visual examinations in Norway were evaluated. Possible tests were considered according to the WHO criteria for screening. Red reflex examination at birth and at 6 weeks of age to detect congenital cataract and examination of visual acuity to detect amblyopia at 4 years of age are the only screening procedures recommended. What should be done in addition to screening is outlined, as are signs and symptoms of visual impairment.
