ABSTRACT

Citicoline (Cytidine-5-diphosphocoline) is an endogenous substance intermediary for the synthesis of phosphatidilcholine. It is a fundamental phospholipid in the neuronal membrane and due to his role in the biosynthesis of structural phospholipids it increases the metabolism of cerebral structures and inhibits the degradation of phospholipids themselves. In the literature it has been referred that citicoline can ameliorate and improve the visual performance in amblyopic eyes “beyond the plastic period”, due to its effects on noradrenaline and dopamine. We report the results of the treatment of 12 amblyopic children with citicoline. The age ranged from 7 to 12 years and all had strabismic amblyopia yet treated with occlusion therapy without success. All the children showed a visual improvement after one month from six months of follo-up and a decreasing of the V.A. reached from six to twelve months. According to the literature we stress the importance of citicoline in amblyopic patients “beyond the plastic period” with some cautions. KEYWORDS:Amblyopia, Occlusion,Citicoline
