ABSTRACT

The paper examines the influence of variability of the interparticle friction angle on the macroscopic strength parameter of a granular particulate assembly. The technique of distinct element method is used in the analysis. Particles with random distributions of interparticle friction angle are considered for homogeneous as well as heterogeneous particle assemblies. It is observed that the macroscopic behaviours of homogeneous and heterogeneous assemblies are different even though they might have the same mean value of interparticle friction angle.
