ABSTRACT

The paper discusses the probabilistic basis for limit state design in geotechnical engineering. It outlines the procedure for the determination of partial factors in limit state design equations. The importance of bias in the formulation for limit state design codes is discussed. A new concept of equivalent coefficient of variation is introduced to transform a non-Gaussian random input parameters into an equivalent Gaussian variable. Some recommendations will also be made for the implementation of limit state geotechnical codes.
