ABSTRACT

Field observations from 177 failed and safe cut slopes are used together with a generalized simple model to determine failure frequencies. From these, probabilities of failure in terms of slope height and slope angle are determined for average field conditions as they have existed in the past. Although approximate, the proposal may provide a more sound basis for consideration of proposed slopes than conventional circular or non-circular analyses with the necessary associated assumptions. In addition, critical rainfall data are reviewed for potential future incorporation in the design process.
