ABSTRACT

In geotechnical reliability analysis, the correlations of soil properties, including auto—and cross—correlation, should be considered. The rational approach of which is recommended as follows:

➀ using the second—moment computation method to calculate the reliability index; ➁ using the random field theory to the statistics of soil properties in order to consider the effect of auto—correlation and other uncertainties; ➂ introducing covariances between different soil indexes into calculation formulas of the reliability index to regard the cross—correlation.

In this paper, the reliability of bearing capacity for a gravity wharf foundation is calculated using this approach.
