ABSTRACT

The productivity of fish farming in Japan has been on the decline resulting from water contamination in and around fish farms and spread of fish diseases. It is a fact that fish cultivation itself, as it is carried out intensively inland bays’ calm sea areas, plays a part in causing seawater pollution. This paper, which purports to ensure seawater quality for fish farming calling for change in the way of thinking about better utilization of fish farming surroundings, verifies that the ongoing water pollution has its origin in organic matters put into the sea in excess of the carrying capacity of nature and presents measures fish farmers themselves should take to prevent water pollution and improve their fish farming environment.
