ABSTRACT

From a modest start in the 1960-ies, Norwegian Aquaculture developed into an important domestic industry, mainly through production of Atlantic salmon. After many years of continous succes, serious problems of different types appeared towards 1990:

Dramatic fall in prices due to overproduction.

Reduced growth and health problems due to self-pollution.

Weather damage of fish farms and escape of fish.

Major fish death caused by diseases and algae blooms.

Negative mass media focus.

The localization philosophy has gradually changed as a response to the above problems. The paper gives a brief historic overwiev and new trends in localization strategy. The paper also discusses some parameters which are important and should be investigated prior to selection of a fish farm site.
