ABSTRACT
Instrumentation that uses underwater acoustics to monitor the behaviour and growth of salmon and trout in open water fish farms has been successfully developed. The vertical distribution and behaviour of the fish in each cage are monitored. With experience, this information can provide an indication of the well-being of the fish. The farmer is also provided with estimates of biomass, average size, size distribution and growth trends for the fish in each cage.
