ABSTRACT

Nutrition is known to influence gonadal growth and fecundity, and it has been generally agreed that quality and quantity of feed as well as feeding regime are important for spawning and egg quality. This chapter summarises and discusses recent advances in knowledge of broodstock nutrition. The knowledge of broodstock nutrition was reviewed by Watanabe, Luquet and Watanabe and recently, Bromage et al reviewed aspects of trout broodstock management regarding egg production, their quality and timing of production in relation to the market. However, there is still a lack of knowledge regarding the interactions between broodstock nutrition and reproduction. Such knowledge is necessary to ensure a supply of healthy juveniles to cover the current growth in fish farming. Several reports have demonstrated that the fatty acid composition of diets has an effect on the reproductive performance in fish, and most of the results have shown that n-3 fatty acids are essential in diets for broodfish.
