ABSTRACT

A review of fish handling in landbased fish farms is given. Handling of fish (internal transport and size-grading) is of special great importance in landbased fish farms because of the high investments. High tank volume utilization is therefore necessary. Several authors have shown that handling can result in stress in fish and the choice of handling method is therefore important. Both moving and size-grading of fish can be done by force or voluntary by the fish. The methods that should be used for internal transport and size-grading must be decided before the farm is build, so that it can be an integrated part of the design. Several examples of farm design were this has been done are presented.
