ABSTRACT
Playas and sabkhas provide some of the most hostile desert terrain in terms of civil engineering and planning. Although many of the problems facing the development of infrastructure in such environments are well known, recent studies have shown that playas are very dynamic environments which exhibit rapid changes in sediment characteristics and moisture/flooding regimes. The paper reviews the implications of these recent studies in the context of economic planning and related aspects of civil engineering.
