ABSTRACT

Approximately 600 lots of holothurians of the Family Psolidae have been identified from collections made by several Antarctic expeditions, including Terra Nova, Discovery, William Scoresby, USARP, BANZARE, and New Zealand Oceanographic Institute. The psolids, comprising approximately 100 species in 8 genera, are distributed world-wide on hard substrates, from intertidal to bathyal depths. They are especially common and diverse in the Antarctic where, before the present study began, 26 nominal species in 5 genera have been described. Nineteen of the 26 known species are represented in the collections. One species is preliminarily regarded as a synonym of a known species. An additional 4 species are regarded as new. In the course of the taxonomic studies, it was determined that Psolus punctatus Ekman, 1925 and Psolidium granulosum (Vaney, 1906) brood their young under their soles. The 359 new locality records for Antarctic psolids facilitate a more detailed study and appraisal of patterns of distribution, and comparison with earlier published analyses.
