ABSTRACT

Field work on the Upper Cretaceous of south central Pyrenees undergone during the last decade and research in collections have resulted in the identification of most of their echinoid faunas and in stablishing their biostratigraphical ranges. Representatives of orders Cidaroida (6), Salenioida (3), Phymosornatoida (7), Pygasteroida (1), Holectypoida (9), Cassiduloida (5), Holasteroida (15), Spatangoida (13) and Orthopsida (1) have been recognized. The phylogeny of Micraster species in the area has been traced and four echinoid cenozones (“Lower Cenomanian”, “Upper Coniacian — Upper Santonian”, “Campanian” and “Lower Maastrichtian”) are described. Palaeobiogeographic analysis generally corresponds with previous palaeo-geographic reconstructions and seems to indicate boreal and east tethyan influences during the U. Campanian — L. Maastrichtian interval. Recent works and projects in course may soon result in a good knowledge of the Upper Cretaceous echinoid faunas from Spain.
