ABSTRACT

An environmental assessment, creating the required database, and following a well planned framework covering all steps in the quarrying operation must be followed. If one reviews the status of the construction industry in Lebanon from the point of view of resources, i.e. quarries and their operations, one can be easily shocked. It is not only a matter of technological innovations that quarrying operations need, but also environment-friendly applications. In trying to project the environmental technology applicable for quarrying operations in Lebanon, one has to understand the problems these operations are facing or inducing. An estimated figure on the total area coverage of quarries from early 1980's to the mid 1990's shows an increase from less than 0.1% to about 0.2% of total territory. This by itself is alarming and, from an environmental perspective, implies land degradation spreading all over the country.
