ABSTRACT
For harnessing small hydropower sources, very often use of induction generators is being suggested to effect economy. However it is often being observed that the protections provided against system faults and abnormal operating conditions are either inadequate or more than that required. In order that the protection provided meet the system requirements just adequately,the paper discusses the operating characteristics of the induction generator,of the power system and of the hydraulic system and proposes a set of protections which can provide it with an effective protective umbrella.
