ABSTRACT

Sophisticated electronic control- and governing equipment has become a world-wide standard for medium and large scale hydro plants. Although a wide range of options is now also available for the field of small hydro, the latest generation of such devices as digital turbine governors, electronic load controllers, PLC-type plant controllers, remote control systems and SCADA-type control- and monitoring systems has apparently not found it’s way yet into Indian small hydro schemes.

The Hilly Hydro Project aims at promoting the introduction and spreading of such modern but proven, not necessarily more expensive control technology at a wider scale. This paper stresses the need for reliable, high performance control and governing equipment at competitive prices, with special emphasis given to a new class of so-called integrated digital controllers, providing features for both turbine governing as well as complete plant control.
