ABSTRACT
Main types of piles have been used in the past decades in Romania as a result of the simultaneous recurence of soils of high compressibility and of contractions carrying heavy loads. The domain of piles is completely covered by technical regulations, among which two national standards (codes) dealing with design matters. A strong emphasis is put on the field tests, especially on static load tests on piles. The design of pile foundations in Romania is governed by the concept of limit state design.
