ABSTRACT

Over 100 large dams or embankments have failed by geotechnical problems, worldwide. Case histories and reports of some of them will be presented. For precalculation of dam break waves and disaster mitigation it is important to know failure modes of dams and embankments due to geotechnical problems. Also of interest is the contribution of the location of geotechnical hazards in relation to the height of the risk in the case of a failure.
