ABSTRACT

As a part of pre-design activities for landfill closure Cyclic Direct Simple Shear (CyDSS) testing was conducted on reconstituted solid waste specimens from the Operating Industries, Inc. (OII) landfill in southern California. The testing was conducted in an on-site laboratory using a large-diameter (460 mm) CyDSS device. The results of the testing program indicate: (i) the tested solid waste behaves as a hysteretic material under CyDSS conditions; (ii) Masing rules apply for the tested solid waste material; and (iii) significant modulus reduction and an equivalent viscous damping increase occur at cyclic shear strains beyond approximately 0.1 percent.
