ABSTRACT

Different aspects of molecular engineering, from second order nonlinear optical response characterization on molecular level, oriented thin film preparation techniques and characterization of their linear and nonlinear optical properties are described and discussed. A particular attention is paid to poled polymers which offer good prospects for practical applications such as frequency doubling and electro-optic modulation, both in the waveguiding configuration. New poling techniques, such as photo-assisted and all optical poling are also described and discussed. Possible applications of the noncentrosymmetric thin films for electro-optic modulation and frequency conversion in waveguiding configuration are also reviewed and discussed.
