ABSTRACT
The mechanical behaviour of materials and, in particular the possibility that some may be plastic and undergo permanent deformations1, while others may be brittle, depends on the nature of the solid in question, on its microstructure, on its ‘history’ (previous deformations), on external conditions (temperature, pressure etc) and, of course, on the manner in which the effort is applied.
