ABSTRACT
Until now, except from p. 147, whenever we have required it, the crystalline periodicity has always been assumed to be perfect. This simplification has so far not been too restrictive. However, it is no longer possible the moment we begin to study phenomena such as atomic mobility (or diffusion) or plastic deformation in materials, phenomena which owe their very existence to breakings of periodicity which we shall call crystalline defects.
